What is Camp De Mar Like?

Camp De Mar is a small town right by the sea, with the huge Mediterranean on one side and the stunning UNESCO Serra Tramuntana on the other. It is in the municipal district of Andratx and is known for its transparent waters and white sandy beaches.

There are tons of holiday homes, and the area is known for its stunning 18-hole championship golf course. It is on the south-west coast of Mallorca, and you can find high-end properties and gorgeous hotels.

It is a mere 20 km from Palma and mostly appeals to British and German couples and families, as well as Americans and Nordic nationalities. It is a mild climate throughout the whole year, but it is the perfect beach destination during the summer months.

History & Culture of Camp De Mar

Camp De Mar does not have a very extensive history as it was initially built as a stunning tourist resort.

But, the whole coastline between Peguera and Port d’Andratx was a hot target for pirate attacks during the Middle Ages.

Due to all of the cliffs and bays, the coast provided shelter for North African buccaneers’ ships so that they could launch raids. Up until the 16th century, a number of watchtowers and fortifications had been built to protect the coast. Some watchtowers are still around today.

In 1932 the first hotel was built, and this was the start of Camp De Mar as a gorgeous holiday resort. Thomas Harris, a British secret agent, was one of Camp De Mar’s most famous residents. A few years later, it became an exclusive destination.

This meant exclusive hotels right on the beach, and they were mostly booked by very wealthy holiday goers, and movie stars and celebrities own several clifftop villas. Today it still remains a very laid-back and quiet destination for holiday-makers.

Beaches in Camp De Mar

Camp De Mar’s local beach is around 180 meters long and is surrounded by apartment complexes and hotels. Parasols, sun loungers, and pedalos are available for hire. The beach has a wooden bridge that takes you to a gorgeous island.

Some other nearby beaches worth a visit include Santa Ponsa, Ses Dones, and Paguera, which are all beautiful year-round.

Things to Do in Camp De Mar

There are loads of things to do in Camp De Mar. If you get bored of sunbathing and enjoying the coves and beaches, you can also go and explore the southwest side of the island or go cycling and hiking up the Serra de Tramuntana Mountain range.

You could also hike to the 16th-century watchtower, which is a popular destination with panoramic views of the countryside and coast. You can also go horse riding or take a boat trip to the Sa Dragonera Natural Park.

The area is well suited for families and couples as there is plenty to do for everyone. There is also the Golf de Andratx golf resort for those wanting to play a round of golf. Golf de Andratx is world-class facilities.

Hotels in Camp De Mar

There are several high-rise hotels in the area along the beautiful beach. Some hotels also have direct access to the sandy beaches. Some popular hotels include the Steigenberger Hotel and Resort, Zafiro Palace Andratx, and the Bahía Suites.

There are loads of hotels available, whether you are looking for one right on a white sandy beach or in a more residential area.

Restaurants in Camp De Mar

There are loads of Spanish restaurants and snack bars in the area serving delicious and good quality food. Most are within a short distance from the resorts. Otherwise, you can easily hop in a car or on the bus and go to Santa Ponsa or Praguera for some more options.

There are local and international options. There is the Restaurante Campino, which overlooks the 18th hole of Golf Andratx, Restaurante Illeta, which is built on a rock just off of Camp De Mar, and you can access it via a wooden bridge. And Restaurante Flor de Sal which has stunning sea views.

Nightlife in Camp De Mar

Camp De Mar is not full of loud nightclubs. Most of the nightlife revolves around the Maria 5 Beach Club and a few local restaurants. If you want to go party and visit some bars, then it is best to go through to the nearby Magaluf, Port Andratx, or Palma.

The Maria 5 Beach Club is a lounge bar and restaurant found under the shade of gorgeous pine trees. It has stunning sea views. There are live DJs every Friday and most Sundays until the end of October, and the chef serves a mix of Asian and Mediterranean dishes.

You should go to Restaurante Illeta for sundowners. You can keep it casual or dress up. It closes at 11 pm, so it is a great choice for some chilled drinks. Campino stays open till the very early hours of the morning, making it the perfect place to be if you want a late one. The restaurant also throws parties throughout the year.

Events in Camp De Mar

There are not too many events in Camp De Mar as it is fairly quiet, but they do have a wonderful local festival of San Agustin and Santa Ana that takes place on the 26th of July.

Shopping in Camp De Mar

There are loads of souvenir shops so you can find a little something to take home with you. But if you are looking for more extensive shopping, it might be best to visit one of the lovely neighbouring ports. You can get to Port d’Andratx by car in about 10 minutes, and you can find a variety of restaurants and shops there.

There is a traditional market on Wednesdays from 8:00-14:00 and Mercadet Nocturno till midnight.

How to get to Camp De Mar

It is a 38.5 km drive from Palma airport to Camp De Mar. You can get there via bus, taxi, car, or shuttle. The drive takes about 35 minutes. Uber is also an option or an airport transfer. You can easily book these online, with your hotel, or at the airport.

Surrounding areas of Camp De Mar

If you want a more authentic Mallorcan holiday or experience, then you should go and visit some of the nearby towns like the Spanish Andratx town. Peguera is close by but does have a lot of German tourists, and so does Port Andratx, a stunning little fishing town.
